Fiona is a registered clinical counsellor with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors, and has been a Kelowna resident for over twenty years. She immensely enjoys the natural beauty and resources the Central Okanagan has to offer year-round. Fiona enjoys spending time with her family, being outdoors in nature, swimming and crafting.
After completing her master’s degree with a major in counselling, Fiona spent over twenty years working in the mental health sector supporting youth, individuals, couples, and families. More specifically, she supported youth in group homes, a youth detention center in Texas and a military style alternative school for a few years. Additionally, her volunteer work with the victim assistance unit of the Austin Police Department refined her career interest, leading to over ten years working in victim services for the local Police Service. Since 2018, Fiona has worked in her private practice. She is currently on the endorsed provider lists by British Columbia Professional Fire Fighters’ Association (BCPFFA), Crime Victim Assistance Program (CVAP), FNHA-FNHB Mental Health, and Focus on the Family
Fiona’s therapeutic approach is client centered, strength-based, and collaborative. Fiona believes that a strong rapport with clients is one of the building blocks to therapeutic effectiveness. She fosters a therapeutic environment that is compassionate, non-judgmental, and empowering while clients work toward achieving their counselling objectives.
Furthermore, Fiona believes that evidence-based therapeutic modalities are other building blocks to therapeutic effectiveness. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Family System Therapy, PAIRS for strong marriages, Gottman Method, Solution Focus Brief Therapy, Mindfulness, and Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) are modalities Fiona uses in her practice with CBT being the primary. She is trained to deliver CBT, CBT-i, CBT-D, and Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD.
After more than ten years of providing crisis interventions to victims of all types of crime and tragedies, Fiona has become a strong believer of Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) and early crisis/trauma interventions.
